Biography

Tayfun Akgül (SM’06) received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, in 1994.,Since 2002, he has been a Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate-level signal processing courses. Between 1999 and 2002, he was a Chief Senior Researcher at the Information Technologies Institute, TUBITAK MAM, Turkey. He was previously an assistant professor and later became an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Cukurova University, Adana, Turkey. From April 1997 to November 1999, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor and later became a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA. Between 1996 and 1997, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. His current research interests include image and signal processing, array processing, acoustics, underwater acoustics, speech, geo-signal processing, and face recognition.

Dr. Akgül has been involved in various capacities , including IEEE Publication Services and Products Board: Member-at-Large (2006–2008 and 2009–2011), Membership Development Committee (2006), PSPB N&A Committee (2006 and 2011), Transnational Committee (2007), TAB/PSPB Committee (2008 and 2011), IEEE PSPB Publishing Conduct Committee (2009–2011), IEEE Career Services Committee (2009–2010), Women in Engineering Committee (2010), IEEE Center for Leadership Committee (2012–2013), IEEE Ethics and Member Conduct Committee (2012–2014), and IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Committee (2015). Additionally , Dr.Akgül is a professional cartoonist and his cartoons have been featured in the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine, the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, the IEEE Region 8 newsletter, and the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine.
